These hybrid schools are blowing up the public education model

Stig Leschly, Call Your Office

moneyStig Leschly is a very busy man.

He teaches about education and entrepreneurship at Harvard Business School, where he has a joint appointment with the Entrepreneurial Management Group and the Initiative on Social Enterprise. He has written widely, and lectures frequently, about urban education reform.

He serves on the boards of trustees for MATCH Charter Public School and KIPP Academy Lynn, charter schools in Massachusetts.

And he is, as of April 2008, the founder and director of the Newark Charter School Fund.

By all accounts, the Fund was established with $4 million pledges each from the Bill & Melinda Gates, Robertson, and Walton Family Foundations and the Doris & Donald Fisher Fund, and $1 million each from three New Jersey-based foundations - the Prudential, Victoria, and MCJ Amelior foundations.

More than a year has since passed, yet the work of the Fund remains a mystery to many in Newark.

What’s the fund valued at today? Who’s benefitted? What’s the process for seeking funding? Who’s deciding?

We thought we’d ask, on behalf of the many in the Newark charter school community with innovative ideas but no funding.

And there are lots of good ideas.

Take Barbara Weiland and Irene Hall (a Harvard grad, Mr. Leschly), co-founders and co-leaders of the Discovery Charter School and veteran Newark educators with proven results. They have a plan to radically change the way students are taught in Newark (more on that later), and have been incubating that plan successfully in their own school for over 10 years. All they need now is money.

Got any suggestions?

We’ve called your office, sent emails, and left messages with the Charter School Fund staff.

We know you’re busy, but in the spirit of accountability, transparency and philanthropy, can you shed some light here?
