- Changing Nation
This collection of stories addresses the common national question, asked by many student reporters in summer 2009, about ways America is changing, technologically, politically, environmentally and more. - Cities
Issues impacting several of the nation's major cities, from education in New York to immigration in Las Vegas were key in News21's coverage. Additionally, Syracuse fellows reported on technology from 11 kinds of cities. - Culture
From technology and art and from music to lifestyle, several News21 projects explored a range of culturally relevant topics, especially Northwestern's "Shift" coverage. - Demographics
Reporting for all News21 topics included intense study of numbers-based trends and data, giving rise to the specific coverage. Maryland particularly delved into demographic data tied to elections. - Economics
Many of the reporting projects delved deeply into economic issues linked to policy, education, employment and social needs. - Education
Columbia's "The Charter Explosion" is the primary project regarding schooling but several others dealt directly or indirectly with education. - Employment
Southern California's "Southwestern Shifts" coverage touched on employment challenges in California and Nevada, but other reporting also incorporated issues about the economic downturn on joblessness. - Environment
North Carolina's "Powering a Nation" project emphasized the impact of U.S. population on energy usage, although a few other stories have environmental relevance. - Ethnicity
News21's "Changing America" theme produced a range of stories relevant to ethnicity and race. See specifically those from Maryland("New Voters"), Arizona State ("Latino America") and Southern California ("Southwestern Shifts"). - Gender
Projects out of Southern California emphasize women in prisons and gay rights. - Immigration
Most incubators had stories that hit on social, political, educational or policy elements of immigration. - Innovation
The main mission of News21 is to do exceptional in-depth journalism with an innovative approach. These are some of the most inventive examples from the 2009 summer experiments. Read more about them in our narrative roundup and learn from the students' experiences on the innovate.news21.com blog. - Policy
Crime, education, immigration, energy and water are among the issues reported on by News21 fellows. - Politics
Maryland's "The New Voters" project is highly focused on politics, but several from other News21 reporters explore politics, along with stories on policy. - Spirituality
News21 reporters' projects explored faith, religion and believe from several perspectives, especially among Latinos. - Technology
Syracuse's "The Young and the Wireless" focused primarily on technological influences on young people, but a few other reporters also produced stories of technological interest. - Urban Issues
Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia are among the cities News21 reporters visited to dig into broad social, economic and cultural issues that signal change in the United States. - Youth
Work particularly relevant to young people is from three incubators: Syracuse (The Young and the Wireless), Maryland (The New Voters) and Northwestern (Shift). However, much of the News21 content is aimed at young people, so several other stories are of interest.
