Extending News21: Publishing & Recognition

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

The Carnege-Knight News21 alliance with Content One, Gannett’s wire service, is showing results. So far, at least one story from the packages released to Gannett’s 85 newspapers, 19 TV stations and general subscribers have been used. Arizona State’s Evan Wyloge’s story on immigration amnesty ran in the Poughkeepsie Journal. The site allbusiness.com used Columbia Maura Walz’s piece on charter schools in Minnesota changing communities and Northwestern’s Melina Kolb’s feature on young immigrants’ hopes in education and the DREAM Act. Gannett continues to run a series of News21 content each week, with packages on environment and military in the works.

Meantime, at North Carolina, the “Reclaiming Creation” package by Courtney Woo and Eileen Mignoni won first place in the team video category of National Press Photographers Association October contest. Also, the complex interactive tool, “Powering Down,” has launched; it allows people to see their power consumption and tips on how to reduce it.

Also, Syracuse’s News21 project The Young and the Wireless officially has launched, though further refinements are forthcoming.
