For 2009, the eight main News21 incubators conducted in-depth cross-disciplinary research on ways America is changing. the below projects are the outcome of that reporting into data, demographics, sociological and historical trends, and more.

  • Arizona State: Latino America
    ASU documents the changing experiences of Latinos at school, in the military, at church and at work in a series of seven innovative multimedia packages that explain “The Latino Experience Across America.”
  • Berkeley: Intersections
    The Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism’s project, “Bay Area Communities at the Crossroads,” captures the changing nature of four California communities with interactive tools and a working prototype of a national database for reporters to share hard-to-find data about cities.
  • Columbia: The Charter School Explosion
    The Columbia Graduate School of Journalism delves into the charter school movement, using examples from New York, Minnesota, D.C., Louisiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan. “Hybrid Schools in Public Education” includes a map showing charter school growth.
  • Harvard
    The four fellows from the Joan Shorenstein Center for Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard’s JFK Kennedy School of Government produced stories working respectively in the incubators of Columbia, North Carolina and Southern California (two).
  • Maryland: The New Voters
    In their project, “Identity and U.S. Politics,” fellows at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism explore how three fast-growing sets of voters – Latinos, youth and mixed-race – are poised to transform American politics. An innovative tag cloud player enhances individual storytelling.
  • Missouri
    The three fellows from the University of Missouri of Journalism produced stories working respectively in the incubators of Columbia, Maryland and North Carolina.
  • Nebraska
    The three fellows from the University of Nebraska College of Journalism and Mass Communications respectively produced stories working in the incubators of Berkeley, Northwestern and Syracuse.
  • North Carolina: Powering a Nation
    UNC shows how increased demand for energy use is producing cracks in the way America gets power. In ” Quest for Energy in a Changing USA,” interactive graphics and video illustrate possible solutions.
  • Northwestern: Shifts
    Students from the Medill Graduate School of Journalism examine the issues confronting the generation of young adults as they confront their futures in a diverse America. Issues in “Young Urban Adults and the New America” include identify, lifestyle, career, community, social responsibility, dating/marriage and others.
  • Southern California: Southwestern Shifts
    In “New Communities & New Realities” USC Annenberg graduate students show how demographic shifts in the Southwest and Mountain West are creating new social dynamics and relations among communities young and old.
  • Syracuse: The Young & the Wireless
    In “Next Gen Rising,” Syracuse University produces video portraits of young people and their families that explore how technology is – and is not – empowering youth in 11 demographically diverse communities across America.
  • Texas
    The three fellows respectively from the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Journalism produced stories working in the incubators of Berkeley, Maryland and Northwestern.
